Boston Bay Wines
In Accommodation, Travel & Tourism

This picturesque vineyard and cellar door was established in 1984 by Graham and Mary Ford who were inspired by the French explorer, Captain Nicholas Baudin.

The captain and his cartographer Citizen Freycinet were so impressed by this spectacular peninsula, believing its slopes would be a good place to grow grapes; they named Boston Bay “Port du Champagny” and Boston Island “Isle de la Grange”.

The tip of the Eyre Peninsula has a good range of soils, even patches of terra rossa over limestone and the climate is cool and temperate. The Ford vineyard faces east, hunkered in below a ridge which neatly deflects the ravaging westerlies which blast in off the Great Australian Bight.

Constantly brushed by the moist, cool air of the Great Southern Ocean, this isolated wine outpost now grows premium riesling, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz grapes of profound quality, producing wine as vital, fresh and clean as the sea which laps at the vineyard’s edge.

Good soil, a gentle climate, precise hand-pruning of each vine, careful hand-picking of the grapes and the meticulous attention of expert winemakers: add a unique location and the result is truly special wine.
