Assured of new digital tv

SOUTHERN Cross Media has assured residents on Eyre Peninsula they will get a full suite of television channels after the analog signal is switched off on December 15 this year.

Southern Cross Media chief operating officer Greg Dodgson said this week that Eyre Peninsula residents would eventually get all the new channels as promised by federal communications minister Stephen Conroy.

"Our intention is to give you a full suite of channels which includes three channels from each broadcaster," Mr Dodgson said.

This included the current Channel 10 service and ONE HD, which is a dedicated sports channel, as well as the current Channel 7 service and 7TWO, which will feature light entertainment programs.

"You would also get Channel 9 and their second offering which is GO," Mr Dodgson said.

He also dismissed rumours that Southern Cross would become obsolete and was instead quite the opposite.

"Yes we'll definitely still have the local news service ... Southern Cross is expanding and developing at the moment."

Mr Dodgson said the new channels might not be available immediately after December 15 as this was still being worked out with the Federal Government.

"The government has said everyone across Australia will get the same service.

"We are still in discussions with the government as to how and when we will deliver these new channels."

Meanwhile a government survey has found 61 per cent of Australian households had converted to digital TV by the end of 2009.

In South Australia the survey found that awareness of the switchover was very high in the Spencer Gulf, Riverland, Mount Gambier and South East.

"Digital switchover is important as it will also free up spectrum which can be used for the delivery of new and improved broadcasting and communications services, such as high speed broadband," Mr Conroy said.
