Call for parliamentary review

05 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
THERE has been a call for a parliamentary review of the approval process for Centrex Metals' development application to export iron ore from Port Lincoln.

Port Lincoln City Council councillor Mick Bascombe and Ross Haldane from the Community Action Group against mineral exports from Port Lincoln want parliament's Environment Resources and Development Committee (ERDC) to review the decision.

Councillors are expected to vote on the issue at their next meeting in two weeks.

Mr Bascombe said there appeared to be some councillors who were content to accept Mr Holloway's decision but there were a number of reasons the council should call for a review.

One reason he gave was a letter from Small Business and Regional Development executive director in the Department of Trade and Economic Development Phil Tyler written in March this year that said the first Centrex minerals exports would be via Port Lincoln, indicating a decision had already been made.

He said the ERDC should also be asked to look at the ability to enforce planning condition five that there be no visible hematite dust from receipt, storage, transfer or ship loading operations.

Mr Bascombe failed to get support from other councillors for two other motions to seek legal advice on the issue of exclusive use of the facilities for Wilgerup iron ore and ask Urban Development and Planning Minister Paul Hollloway to explain his reasons for disregarding advice from the Environmental Protection Authority.

Councillor Danny Bartlett said the EPA had withdrawn the submission Mr Bascombe was referring to and he disagreed Mr Holloway had disregarded information in the EPA's replacement submission.

Mr Bascombe withdrew a motion to seek legal advice on a conflict of interest by Minister Paul Holloway who approved the application as Urban Development and Planning Minister when he is also the Mineral Resources and Development Minister.
