Cancer support for Port Lincoln

19 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
FORMER local resident Kathryn Cunningham is seeking community support to establish a Cancer Centre Foundation in Port Lincoln.

The Robert Anchor Cancer Centre Foundation will be in memory of her late father Robert Anchor who died of bowel cancer in December 2008.

Ms Cunningham said it was difficult for her father during the 11 months he had cancer because the majority of the support and treatment was in Adelaide or interstate and all he longed for was to be home in Port Lincoln in his own environment with family and friends.

There are limited choices in regional South Australia and Ms Cunningham said she felt strongly that people should have choices of services in their own community.

"This would assist people in their well being and reduce some of the stress for the person that has cancer," she said.

With this in mind Ms Cunningham is volunteering her time to develop and establish a foundation in Port Lincoln that will build funds to generate a continuous stream of income to provide quality services to support people living with cancer, their carers and families.

She is planning a public meeting in December to gauge support for the initiative, which will rely heavily on donations from the community and also will apply for government funding.

"Supportive care provides services to people living with or affected by cancer to meet their physical, social and emotional needs during the pre-diagnostic, diagnostic, treatment and follow up phases of cancer," Ms Cunningham said.

The vision of the foundation is to provide residents of Port Lincoln and surrounding areas with a premier cancer centre providing support, education and holistic care for people diagnosed with cancer.

Cancer care nurses would visit people with cancer offering support, services and education.

Ms Cunningham said the foundation would eventually like to be able to offer alternative accommodation for end of life.

The public meeting will be held on Friday December 4, 6.30pm to 7.30pm in the Port Lincoln Hotel.
