IN the words of Australian saint Mary McKillop, Port Lincoln's Citizen of the Year Diana Height encouraged people at the city's Australia Day ceremony to follow her lead and, "never see a need without doing something about it".
Mrs Height was nominated for her contributions to the Port Lincoln community through various committees and organisations such as the Catholic church, the Croatian Club, Tunarama Quest and fundraising for the Cancer Council.
Mrs Height, who was nominated for the award by her daughter Johana Mislov, said she appreciated her parents' choice to immigrate to Australia, where she was born.
She dedicated her award to the committees she is a member of, all volunteers in the community and her family.
"This is for my dad who I know would be very proud of me and for my husband John who loved and encouraged and supported me always."
Young Citizen of the Year was CFS volunteer and Coyotes baseballer Geoff Earle and the Community Event of the Year was the Bluebird Markets, with organisers Jodie Haylock and Sally Braakhuis accepting the award and thanking the stallholders for their support.
The Sportsperson of the Year trophy was shared by young sailors Ashleigh Dyer and Georgina Hughes, who have represented the region at a state, national and international level.
People at the foreshore for Australia Day events also witnessed a citizenship ceremony for 10 new Australian citizens.
Louise Golding, Chester Wilkes, Orawana Cairns, Stuart Graham, Kelly Graham, Daniel Wareham, Aimee Graham, and Bernadette, Jose and Seth Melocoton took part in the ceremony.
