THE Cummins community has been devastated by the loss of Corey Fitzgerald, 22, who was killed in a car accident on Saturday evening.
The talented footballer was on his way to the Cummins Ramblers football and netball count night where he was widely tipped to win the A grade best and fairest trophy.
Mr Fitzgerald won the award but never made it to the presentation night and was unaware of his achievement.
Police say Mr Fitzgerald died after his car rolled on Cemetery Hill Road at Cummins. The wreckage was found at about 1am on Sunday.
Mr Fitzgerald was a popular member of the community and worked on the family farm at Cockaleechie.
A highly skilled footballer, he also coached the Ramblers colts team and was admired by the young players.
Ramblers president David Guidera said the community was devastated by the loss of a terrific young man who was widely loved.
"He was coach of the colts and they adored him and looked up to him," he said.
He said the way Mr Fitzgerald went about his football and tennis was admirable.
"He was a hugely popular member of the club and generally as a member of our community."
Mr Guidera said the whole Fitzgerald family was well known and widely respected on Eyre Peninsula.
"Our thoughts are with them at this time and Corey will be remembered and sadly missed."
Mr Fitzgerald was among three men who died on South Australian roads over the weekend.
SA Police issued a statement yesterday urging motorists to drive safely and responsibly at all times.
The road toll stands at 84 compared to 60 at the same time last year.
