Flare up, new fire make a busy weekend for local firefighters

02 Feb, 2010 12:30 AM
FIVE aircraft and 16 firefighting trucks attended a fire at the Uley South basin on the weekend, with the December fire also flaring briefly.

Metropolitan Fire Service station officer John Wise said the December fire flared from tree roots that had been pulled out on the corner of Grantala and Nootina Roads, but it was quickly contained.

This call out brought the number of incidents attended by the MFS up to 36 for January, with 89 recorded for December.

Country Fire Service regional commander Kevin May said about 50 hectares of scrub was burnt in the Uley fire.

Twelve CFS trucks responded at 12.35pm, with crews leaving at about 10pm, and four Department for Environment and Heritage appliances were also on site during the day and overnight.

The two locally stationed water bombers, a spotter, a water bomber aircraft from Adelaide and the air attack supervisor from Adelaide attended at the start of the fire.

A bulldozer was used to create a containment line for crews to work from, which will also help contain future fires in the area.

Crews walked through the fireground on Sunday with the infrared camera to pick up and extinguish hot spots.

The fire had the potential to become serious in the warm and windy weather conditions, but it was brought under control quicker than expected as the scrub had large patches of grass and cleared tracks, making the area accessible.

"It was lucky SA Water had done work on the roads and tracks, so we were able to access the pump," Mr May said.

The MFS attended several minor incidents over the weekend, including a small scrub fire across from Axel Stenross museum, an alarm set off by smoke emitted from food cooking in the Grand Tasman Hotel kitchen, and a reported gas leak at Lincoln Cove, which turned out to be a gas-like smell coming from the channel.
