Flocking flamingos

03 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
IF you wake up to a front yard of plastic pink flamingos this month you have been "flocked", but it's all for a good cause.

Random people will get "flocked" by the RSL throughout November to help raise money for the RSL Port Lincoln branch.

People who find a flock in their garden can pledge a donation to pass the same pleasant surprise onto a friend.

The woman behind the fundraiser Jo Utting, an affiliate member of the RSL, found the fundraising idea on the internet and thought it would be a fun way to raise money and create publicity for the local RSL.

She is looking forward to stopping people in their tracks and hopefully putting a smile on their face when they realise they have been flocked.

People travelling down Liverpool Street yesterday may have noticed the first flocking victim, the Sea Salt Cafe.

Anyone who doesn't want to be flocked can make a donation to buy "flocking insurance", which will ensure their yard remains flamingo free.

The money raised will be used to finish two projects at the clubrooms on Hallett Place.

The barbecue area needs an upgrade because volunteer cooks work in primitive conditions and have to negotiate stairs to deliver the food to the kitchen.

A roof has been put up but the cooking area needs to be raised and the RSL would like to to add a deck for outdoor dining.

Flocks will settle for no longer than 24 hours and will migrate around Port Lincoln during November.

Follow the progress of the flock on maps at the Hotel Boston, the RSL Clubrooms, the Sea Salt Cafe and Coles.
