Fresh look needed for skate park

07 Feb, 2008 08:47 AM
GRAFFITI and wear and tear has taken its toll on the mural at the Port Lincoln skate park and councillor Jill Parker thinks it’s time for a fresh coat of paint.

The current mural was painted by a group of youth with an artist about five years ago when the skate park opened.

The Port Lincoln City Council voted on Monday night to get quotes for a new mural project involving another group of students from local schools.

“I think much of the damage is because the group of young people that were part of the planning and painting of the mural have long gone and the new group of young people have no ownership (of the mural),” Mrs Parker said.

“It needs to become valuable to the youth once again.”

Mrs Parker said once the council knew how much a new mural would cost it could apply for arts funding to paint a new mural or paint out the mural altogether.

“It’s tired and even without the graffiti it’s still tired.”

Mrs Parker is also keen to involve West Coast Youth Services in a group to look at how to reduce graffiti and property damage around the city.
