IMPROVEMENTS to the changerooms and football league office at Centenary Oval are progressing well and the grandstand won't be far away, with hopes to have it up in time for this year's football finals.
Tiling has started in the changerooms and work is about to start on the footings for the extension to the administration area.
Port Lincoln City Council community infrastructure manager Nigel Melzner said organisers were aiming to have the whole project finished by the beginning of the football season but the priority was to finish the changerooms.
"The football league administration extension is not as critical," he said.
"Once again we sincerely thank all the people that have volunteered their time or given reduced cost materials to the project."
The upgrade received about $80,000 worth of donations and in kind support last financial year and Mr Melzner said without that it would not have come in on budget, which was $300,000.
"We achieved a lot more than we would have."
He hoped this year there would be similar savings.
The grandstand will be community funded with no money coming from the council for the project, but the committee driving it has also applied for a number of grants and hopes to make use of seating from Adelaide Oval.
The plans have been approved by the council and Centenary Oval upgrade committee member Kaylene Dufek said the group was aiming to have the grandstand finished by 2012 football finals, but definitely by the 2013 Mortlock Shield.
Mrs Dufek said people had been very supportive and generous and it would not have been possible without community support.
The Lincoln South Football Club has been among the big contributors to the project, putting $10,000 toward the new grandstand.
The committee has sent letters to people who pledged money and it has already started coming in but Mrs Dufek said there was still time for people who had not made a pledge to make a donation.
"It's the last opportunity to get on board and be part of this community built grandstand," Mrs Dufek said.
All pledges over $200 will be recognised on a plaque.
To donate toward the community project go to the Port Lincoln Bendigo Bank or to send a cheque or make a direct deposit contact Kaylene Dufek on 0413 351 928, or by mail at PO Box 619, Port Lincoln.
