Growout success at Clean Seas

20 Apr, 2009 11:30 PM
THE dream of growing out southern bluefin tuna that have been bred onshore looks like it has become a reality.

Clean Seas Tuna announced yesterday that it has grown some of the tuna to 2.5 centimetres in about 28 days.

The company's broodstock have now produced in excess of 50 million eggs and 30 million tuna larvae have been produced, with fertilisation rates of more than 90 per cent.

"Our dream has become a reality," company chairman Hagen Stehr said.

Mr Stehr said it was possible the larvae the company had in its tanks now could be the first fish grown out in sea cages.

Either way he said the company would now press ahead with its plans for commercialisation of the fish, probably in November this year.
