Hoons cause vehicle restrictions on Long Beach

04 Nov, 2009 11:30 PM
SUPPORT has been given to restrict vehicle access on Long Beach at Coffin Bay due to regular acts of hoon driving on the foreshore.

After hoon driving was noticed on the October long weekend, the Department for Environment and Heritage developed a strategy to minimise public and environmental risk posed by vehicle access.

The department approached the Lower Eyre Peninsula District Council for support, which it gave.

The council said it would provide labour and materials for the work as long as there was also a public education and information campaign.

Over a period of time, the department received numerous complaints from the public regarding vehicle access. They undertook monitoring to confirm environmental and safety issues associated with unrestricted vehicle access.

Concerns included disturbance to shorebird feeding activity, cockle beds and samphire areas, vegetation and the impact on the resting areas of shorebirds in the sand dunes.
