Improving services for assault victims

03 Mar, 2010 11:30 PM
THE Port Lincoln Sexual Assault Reference Group is advocating for changes in the criminal justice system to better support victims of sexual assaults.

The group is pushing for courts to accept teleconference evidence, which would allow witnesses, including victims and doctors, to stay in their community to give evidence, rather than having to travel to Port Augusta for a trial.

The group has been working for the past four years to improve services and assistance for adults who have been recently sexually assaulted.

Amongst the changes, Port Lincoln now has a 24 hour crisis response service being provided by Yarredi Services.

This worker is available to talk over options and provide immediate support, counselling and information to a recent adult victim, male or female, whether or not the person wishes to report the incident to police.

Local doctor Kris Bascomb is now conducting forensic medical examinations for victims who want evidence gathered locally as opposed to travelling to Adelaide for the service.

Victims can also have "just in case" evidence collected, coded and stored for three months, giving a victim the chance to decide whether or not to press charges against an offender.

In recent years, victims of rape have been unable to access local support, including forensic investigations, and someone to talk over options and choices.

The group hopes with adequate support services victims on Eyre Peninsula would feel more comfortable to come forward and make formal complaints, or seek support and counselling.

The group includes local participants from the Port Lincoln Police, Victim Support Service, Port Lincoln Health Service and Yarredi Domestic Violence Service.

If people have been a victim of sexual assault, support and information is available from Yarredi Services on 8683 0311 or the Victim Support Service on 8683 0111. For a 24 hour crisis response, contact the Port Lincoln Hospital Accident and Emergency Department, Port Lincoln Police, or Yarrow Place in Adelaide on 1800 817 421.
