VEGEMITE and education were top of the list for Cummins youth Olivia Dickinson who began the Lower Eyre Peninsula District Council Australia Day proceedings with a speech about what being Australian means to her.
Earlier, a delicious Aussie breakfast in front of the Cummins Hall was enjoyed and then the large crowd gathered inside to see the 2010 Australia Day awards presentations.
After the National Anthem and a selection of Australiana songs sung by the Sing Australia Choir, the crowd was welcomed by council chief executive Rod Pearson and mayor Julie Low.
Following Olivia's entertaining speech, the award presentations got underway including Citizen of the Year to Jo-Anne Quigley, Young Citizen of the Year to Emma Glover and Community Event of the Year to the United Yeelanna Football Club Centenary Celebrations.
Accepting the award on behalf of the United Yeelanna Football Club was Dianne Watson, one of the event's organisers.
The club celebrated 100 years of football within the community over a weekend in August last year.
The committee worked hard to commemorate a time in its history and honour those who lived it by gathering young and old for a weekend of celebration.
The committee was recognised for their many hours of work including catering for 500, auctioning heritage guernseys, putting together a team of the year and years of memorabilia among much more.
Emma Glover of Yeelanna was presented the Young Citizen of the Year Award for 2010.
Some of Emma's achievements include Cummins Youth Advisory Committee treasurer, student representative council president, school captain of her sporting house, Rostrum Voice of Youth State semi-finalist, winner of the Zonta Club of Port Lincoln Young Woman in Public Affairs Award, level one sports trainer and involvement in the Yeelanna Uniting Church.
It was acknowledged that Emma is regarded as a successful individual with impressive academic and personality strengths and is a worthy recipient.
Jo-Anne Quigley of Cummins was then presented with the Citizen of the Year Award for 2010.
Mrs Quigley has been a proactive volunteer within the Cummins community, offering commitment, leadership and teamwork skills.
It was noted at the awards that with six children and a professional husband, Mrs Quigley has managed to balance many aspects of her life to achieve a sound and solid foundation for her family.
Just some of the many activities she has been involved in include: choreography director at music hall events, Ramblers Netball Club president, Cummins and District Swimming Pool committee, Cummins Amateur Swimming Club committee, Cummins Sports Centre Project committee, Cummins and District Hospital, Wildeloo, Cummins Airshow catering director, Cummins Gymnastics Club, Kindy Gym, Cummins Area School, St Andrews Catholic Church, Cummins Under Canvas - coordinator of the inaugural event in 2004 and the Cummins and District Enterprise committee.
At the awards presentation, it was acknowledged that Mrs Quigley has held a wide range of positions in many of these groups and is a very worthy recipient of the award.
