Lucky to walk after weekend footy injury

02 Jul, 2009 12:30 AM
JULIAN Webb is lucky to be walking after sustaining a serious neck injury playing football on Saturday.

Mr Webb was playing B grade for Eyre United at Cummins on the weekend and ended up being flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was unfortunate to be involved in a collision with another player where his head clashed with the leg of an opponent.

"I went in for the ball and ducked my head and felt my neck crunch into my shoulders," Mr Webb said.

"For 15 minutes my top half was virtually paralysed, which was pretty scary.

"I told the guys not to touch me till they put me in a neck brace."

Mr Webb was flown to Adelaide in an emergency retrieval plane where it was discovered he had fractured two cervical vertebrae (in his neck).

"I'm gonna walk ... I've been very lucky," a relieved Mr Webb said on Tuesday.

After putting Mr Webb in traction, doctors inserted a plate inside him, which will enhance his recovery.

"I'll be out of action for about three weeks but this has finished my footy career.

"I could've been in a wheelchair," he said.

Mr Webb hoped he would be heading home to his family at Tumby Bay on Wednesday.

Eyre United Football Club president Brian Fiegert said the club was relieved there had been no damage to Mr Webb's spinal cord and wished him a speedy recovery.
