Making the region stronger

02 Jul, 2009 12:30 AM
EYRE Peninsula has a new pool of leaders to inspire communities across the region after a group of 16 locals graduated from the Strengthening Eyre Peninsula leadership development program last week.

The aim of the nine-month program was for future and current leaders to gain skills and knowledge to help make Eyre Peninsula more sustainable.

The 16 participants each took on a community project over the nine months to put their new skills into practice, reinvigorating the region with a range of projects from bringing AFS exchanges back to Eyre Peninsula to an art journey through Kimba.

Other projects included a festival of legends at Darke Peak, Family Matters values workshops, expanding the Red Cross Transport Service to Eastern Eyre Peninsula, sourcing land management funding, a Community Water Investigation for children, case studies on the importance of education, Local Internet Network Community (LINC), an assessment of Eyre Peninsula's needs beyond government drought assistance, a pictorial museum at Wanilla, an alternative learning and career development centre, reducing homelessness and overcrowding through private rental, bringing movies back to Cowell, community engagement about marine parks and a children's book, and the Eyre Peninsula Communities Foundation.

Program leader Jason Downs said the program produced a diverse range of projects.

"I have no doubt each and every project will influence the growth and strength of the Eyre Peninsula," Mr Downes said.

He hopes the program, run by the Eyre Regional Development Board and the Eyre Peninsula Natural Resources Management Board, will be repeated.
