Marine parks overdue

02 Feb, 2009 11:30 PM
MARINE parks are urgently needed to protect marine wildlife, according to Wildernesss Society campaign manager and Marine Parks Council conservation representative Peter Owen.

"SA's vast coastline provides an important refuge for many rare and vulnerable marine animals, including the Australian sea-lion, southern right whale and leafy sea dragon, with almost 85 per cent of our marine species found nowhere else on earth," Mr Owen said.

"Despite this, very little of SA waters have any form of protection and (the) release of 19 marine park outer boundaries for public consultation is long overdue."
