Plans for Tod Reservoir

05 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
ONE day there could be walking trails and other recreational water activities around the Tod Reservoir.

Recently the Lower Eyre Peninsula District Council met with SA Water and Tumby Bay District Council to discuss the future use of the reservoir.

This came about from community consultation in developing the SA Water Long Term Plan for the Eyre Region.

From the consultation, the suggestion was made to explore future recreational use of the area if it was not required for the region's water supply. While the reservoir does not form part of the water supply system for the region, it is an integral part of the overall contingency plan for the system.

As well as the possible development of walking trails and water-based activities, they discussed the retention of the existing museum.

The Lower Eyre council gave its support to the proposal but advised it did not wish to take over management of the reservoir site.

However the Tumby Bay District Council has expressed some concern over the proposal in that recreational use may result in an increased risk of fire throughout the dry summer months, and like the Lower Eyre council, has questioned who would be responsible for the ongoing management and maintenance.

Possible use of the reservoir water for the imminent increase in the mining industry on the Eyre Peninsula was also raised by the Tumby council.

SA Water intends to engage a consultant to further explore the opportunities for the reservoir.

If recreational access were permitted to the site, funding would be required to address many issues associated with opening the land for public use.
