Recreational fishers want to know more

08 Feb, 2010 11:30 PM
THE chair of the Lower Eyre Peninsula Marine Parks Local Advisory Group has encouraged the public to attend the group's first meeting this Wednesday.

Chair Danny Bartlett, also a Port Lincoln councillor, said people were invited to the meeting at Ravendale Sports Centre tomorrow from 1 to 5pm.

The group has been established to help develop management plans for marine parks 5, 7 and 8, including waters around Coffin Bay and the Neptunes.

"It'll be the first meeting of a few, and will be mostly introductory stuff, explaining the terms of reference and how it's going to work," Mr Bartlett said.

He said everyone was welcome to attend the meeting with the main controversy already emerging.

"People seem to be mainly concerned about the sanctuary zones (no fishing zones), where they'll be and how big.

"As chair, I'm keen to have the meeting as open and transparent as possible, the more input and say the community can have the better the result will be," Mr Bartlett said.

Other members of the group include Bill Ford (professional fisherman), Norm Pope (SA Recreational Fishing Advisory Council), Kerryn McEwan (EP Natural Resources Management) and Brian Saunders (Friends of Coffin Bay National Park).

Mr Bartlett said he chaired another meeting last Wednesday called by Mr Pope on behalf of recreational fishers on Eyre Peninsula.

"It was his way of representing his constituents, so he could gauge the views of recreational fishers before the first local advisory group meeting," Mr Bartlett said.

He said about 40 recreational anglers attended the meeting and again the top priority was sanctuary zones.

"They were asked what areas they would be willing to give up and where they would not.

"In the end the group decided they want to negotiate over all areas the government is proposing before they comment.

"They also want any future decisions on changes to marine parks to be parliamentary process and not just ministerial decision," he said.
