Residents' Altair playground plans

05 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
RESIDENTS who banded together to save their local park, Altair Crescent Reserve, being developed have given the Port Lincoln City Council a list of what they would like to see done as part of an upgrade of the reserve.

New equipment, table and chairs, a fence and barbecue are among their ideas.

Altair Crescent resident Mary Lugg, who led the fight to stop the park being replaced with affordable housing, has spoken to others who supported her campaign and local residents after the council asked how they would suggest spending the money allocated for an upgrade.

$45,000 is budgeted in the 10-year playground strategy for an upgrade, and council community infrastructure manager Nigel Melzner said after the residents had fought to stop the land being developed he encouraged them to finish the job and prioritise how they would like the money spent.

Their priority was equipment for children from toddlers up to 12-year-olds including swings, a baby swing, slides, tunnels, "things that bounce" and a mini excavator.

Parents of children who like to ride bikes through the park also raised concerns about the grass along the tracks and asked for the grass to be cut closer to the scrub to define the paths.

There are also boxthorns, some next to the play area, that Mrs Lugg said should be removed.

On the long term "wish list" residents would also like to see a barbecue area with seating, a safety fence and signs in the street warning that children are playing nearby.

A playground sub-committee has also been formed to liaise with the community and gather feedback about what is required to ensure that when the council does an upgrade it what the community wants.
