THE Port Lincoln Primary School has won $1500 for being the State winner in the Music Council of Australia's Flame Awards for it's singing program.

Over 170 Year 3 and 4 students take part in weekly choir time and many music genres are covered during the program, and the 130 Year 5, 6 and 7 students get involved in the Festival of Music program.

The school also manages the Eyre Peninsula Regional Choir Festival.

Teacher Anne Hueppauff said it was great to win, and past students of the school have been phoning from interstate to congratulate the school.

Mrs Hueppauff said it was an achievement for the school as it was competing against schools that specialised in music. The competition is in its fourth year and it is the first time the school has entered.

There were 176 applications from across Australia and five of the 38 finalists were from South Australia, two of which were primary schools.

The Flame Awards are run by 'Music. Play for Life', which is the Music Council of Australia's national campaign to encourage more music making in schools and communities.

The judges' comments included that the school recognised the flow on benefits to students when music is integrated into school life.
