EYRE Peninsula is closer to having its own identity in the form of a flag after Shaun Thomas's design won the flag competition instigated by Member for Flinders Liz Penfold.
But the competition isn't over, with the public able to have its say in the people's choice section, which will see the winner receive $800.
The winners in the children's section are also yet to be judged.
The top 20 flags will appear in Tuesday's Port Lincoln Times for people to vote on with voting closing on December 16 and the winner announced in the Times on December 18.
Mrs Penfold and Bob and Musharella Puglisi from Kinkawooka donated the prizemoney for the competition.
Mr Thomas will receive $1000 for winning first prize for his simple design that represents the region as "progressive, uncomplicated and proud".
"I found it impossible to convey the breadth and diversity of the Eyre Peninsula in a simple composition of traditional symbols," he said.
"I believe the essence of this wonderful region can be captured in colour and shape alone.
"My design incorporates three graphical elements ... the land mass, the ocean and the coastline.
"The colour of the land ranges from the traditional ochres and rich oxides of our northern soils through to the warm golden yellows of our expansive grain fields.
"Similarly, the deep navy blues of the fish-rich Southern Ocean blends in to the softer cyans of our sheltered bays and estuaries."
A stark white line separates the land from the sea and also represents the peninsula's pristine sandy beaches and pounding surf breaks. Don't forget to buy next Tuesday's Port Lincoln Times so you can vote for your favourite flag.
