 Trade Training Centre at Cummins

Trade Training Centre at Cummins

18 Nov, 2009 11:30 PM
CUMMINS Area School's agriculture subject is set to soar in the next couple of years, with $700,000 allocated to upgrade the facilities and make it a Trade Training Centre.

The Federal Government's funding will allow for the school to replace an implement shed and upgrade the classroom to have up to date technology.

This technology will allow the school to interact with other schools' students and teach the subject through video conferencing equipment.

The funding will also go towards an intensive feedlot with new yarding and sheltered area, a new hay shed and tractor. The school delivers parts of Certificate II in Agriculture but once the upgrade is complete it will offer up to Certificate III.

The intensive feedlot will be for beef cattle and it is expected the school will have three to five beef cattle at a time for around 90 days before they are slaughtered.

This will be in addition to the school's annual led steer program that involves Year 10 students.

Acting principal Teleah Wilson said it was good to have an upgrade in technology as it enabled the school to share with others like Cleve, which also had an agriculture focus.

The upgrade will also take care of smell management issues, she said.

With the higher level of learning on offer, it will give students more qualification to be selected for university or more knowledge when entering the workplace.

It is hoped the project will begin by the end of next year.

Other schools that received funding were Port Lincoln High School, Ceduna Area School, Streaky Bay Area School, Kimba Area School, Cowell Area School and Wudinna Area School.

The Trade Training Centres in Schools Program is part of the government's Building the Education Revolution and aims to provide a better quality of learning that helps the transition from school to work or more education.

It will provide $2.5 billion over 10 years to enable all secondary schools to apply for funding of between $500,000 and $1.5 million for Trade Training Centres.
