A very special day for cricket

19 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
Port Adelaide versus Eyre Peninsula

CRICKET history will be made on February 28 next year when the Port Adelaide District Cricket Club visits Port Lincoln to play Eyre Peninsula in a twenty/20 match at Centenary Oval.

This will be Port Adelaide's second visit to Port Lincoln, the first being over Tunarama this year when they played a twenty/20 match under lights at the Ravendale Sports Complex.

The program for this special event will see three Twenty/20 matches played.

The Eyre Peninsula Cricket Academy will play a huge part with the under 14s opening the day, followed by the under 16s.

The selection criteria for the under 14s and under 16s could see the Lower EP play the upper EP, and further discussions will take place as to selection of the teams that will play.

The starting times for the entire program are also still under discussion and will be decided on in the near future.

Special event

While this special event is a history making event for cricket it is also a history making event for the entire sports community of Eyre Peninsula.

Arguably it is one of the biggest days for cricket, apart from the international teams that have toured Australia.

The Port Lincoln Cricket Association, led by president Brian Harvey, has had informal talks that Port Lincoln will approach Cricket Australia to again have a touring team visit Port Lincoln.

The success of Port Adelaide's visit to Centenary Oval can only enhance the chances such a visit could take place.

Special events need the support of Eyre Peninsula, local business and goodwill and support from the Port Lincoln City Council.

Port Adelaide are the reining XXXX Gold Cup Champions for SA and it will be a challenge for the EP first XI.

There will be an EP match committee appointed to select the best of the best on EP.

The match will be a colourful event with players outfitted in full colour, the white ball, black sight screens and umpires dressed in all black.

Talks have already taken place for two marquee players to take part and if successful, supporters will see two of South Australia's and Australia's favourite cricket sons take part.

Also on the table is a sportsmen's night at the Grand Tasman Hotel, following a day of Twenty/20 Cricket at Centenary Oval.

It all adds up to a great adventure for cricket on EP for both supporters and players.

The energy that has come forward to stage this special event must continue to build.

B grade program

SES v Tod River, Wangary; Lincoln South v Charlton, high school; and Tasman v Wayback, Dorward Oval.

Grand Tasman Legends Award

The Legend for round six goes to South batsman/wicketkeeper Steve Orchard, well known as the Orch the Torch.

He was again on top of the bowlers, knocking up 84 and added a smart stumping to top off the day.

Orchard has made 288 runs to date to have an average of 47.33, and another century is on the cards to one of EP's premier batsmen.

Another strong effort by South's Shaun Hancock with 45 runs, and a good all round effort by Nathan Sincock, making 35 not out and taking 2/15 off six overs against SES, has taken South to top spot and they could prove hard to dislodge from the top spot.

For SES, Jeremy Wagner scored 42 runs, while Charlton's Liam Knight, who can be one of the most dangerous all rounders in the competition, top scored with 62 not out in their second win over Wayback.

Tod River's bowlers Kerry O'Leary, Toby Lynch and Tom Gent combined to take three wickets each for a collective 55 runs off 19.4 overs in their win over Tasman, and the River's Bobby Earle again featured with the bat to top score with 34 runs not out.

Harry's Pizza Award

Lincoln South's Bs were abuzz last Saturday and under new captain Ryan Dawson, who made 33 runs opening the innings, are now in the chase for a premiership.

The King of the Buzzing Bee's for the day was won by South's Jarden Stoetzer who made 42 runs and took 3/21 off his nine overs. So pop in and see your football mate Shannon and get a pizza with the works fit for a king.

While on Jarden he has now taken eight wickets for 54 runs off 18 overs in his last two matches, and must seriously be under consideration for a go in the A grade if he wants a spot.

Charlton's Ryan Cottrell, batting at number four, looks a promising type knocking up 64 runs, and young Chris Strudwick took 4/32 off his nine overs only to see their side get beaten when the durable Shane Porter took 5/21 off his nine overs to be named player of the match.

Tod River were best served by opener Nick Harris with 32 runs and Andrew Briggs took 4/23 off seven overs in their win over Tasman.

For the Red Caps, 20-year-old Chris Amos stood out making 37 at number eight and took 2/15 off two overs in their loss to Tod River.

Great Northern Hotel Award

Bat dominated the ball on Saturday.

James Lakin from Tasman White continued his good form with 44. David Murray, Tasman White, made 49 and Ziek Kay retired on 50 for Wayback.

The award this week goes to Jack Parsons from Wayback who retired on 51, including six fours on a slow outfield at Ravendale.

Well done Jack, keep up the good form.

Coles Team Player Award

Wickets were hard to come by with several players taking two wickets for the day.

Kirk Mortimer from Charlton took 3/3 off his five overs.

However, his efforts were overshadowed by Riley Harris from Tasman Red who took 4/10 off 5.3 overs including one maiden to win the award this week.

Well done Riley.

Stats for the week

Out of 52 batsman dismissed, 33 batsman were out caught in A grade - it appears they're getting bat to ball but don't know where to hit it!

Wicketkeepers had a good day with five batsman stumped and seven catches taken out of the 52 batsmen dismissed, with the River's Jim Bascomb taking one catch and three stumpings.

Henderson Shield

Port Lincoln is scheduled to travel to Ceduna on Saturday, December 5, with Ben Smith from SES appointed captain.

The schedule of training sessions and teams will appear in the Times.
