Tod River 10/147 lost Wayback to 7/149
WAYBACK just managed to get over the line in the final minor round game against Tod River at Dorward on Saturday.
Standing in for regular captain Adam Hage, Tynan Keeley won the toss and elected to bat in the windy conditions.
Unfortunately the start that Tod River had did not show the importance of a win for them, for if they won and Charlton lost they could make the finals.
But Jim Bascomb, Tom Davey, Robin Earle and Keeley all fell victim to Jock Hollitt as he tore through the Tod River top order, leaving them 4/3 after four overs.
Kerry O'leary didn't last long and the score hadn't changed at the end of the seventh over.
Fortunes did change for the stand in captain when Mark Aldridge and Nick O'Leary put on a 26-run partnership but the Wayback boys were still hungry when O'Leary was dismissed for 17.
Richard Horgan made his way to the crease and the feeling was that this was Tod River's last chance to make a score. Horgan didn't let them down.
Showing his experience and talent, Horgan and his sidekicks of Aldridge, Calderwood and Lynch joined together to have partnerships of 27, 62 and 23 to move the score to 9/141 and by the time that Horgan was dismissed as the last wicket, the Toddie boys had made an unthinkable 147 after being 5/3.
Richard Horgan was the stand-out, hitting six fours and one six on his way to 72. Horgan was supported well by the experienced Aldridge (15) and the young Calderwood (17). Best with the ball was Jock Hollitt with the figures of 5/24 off 10.
Wayback were still confident but were a little shaky to begin with tight early bowling dismissing Addison Lands for three.
But Wayback were in cruise control as the ever reliable Woolford and talented Mitchell took the score onto 52 before Woolford (20) scooped one to Davey.
Lachlan Hollitt was keen to impress early as he joined Mitchell (38) but when both were dismissed after drinks the score was 74 and the Tod River boys were up and about.
Newman and Sargeant joined each other and seemed to take control of the game before Newman's (19) wicket caused a mini collapse with Rodda and James Blewitt well caught by Aldridge for ducks.
This game was going to go down to the wire but Sargeant steadied the Wayback ship with a commanding 38 not out with Jock Hollitt, who backed up his efforts with the ball, hitting a strong 19 not out to get Wayback home by three wickets.
Best with the ball was the impressive Toby Lynch with 3/19 off nine and Keeley with 2/28 off 10.
