B grade grand final
Wayback 10/224 def Tod River 10/178
PETER Kleinig scored a century for Wayback in the grand final to lead his side to a win over Tod River.
On a great day for cricket Wayback skipper Kam Clark won the toss and elected to bat.
Jeremy Wright and Brenton Hammond opened the batting while Tyson Parkyn and Mark Davey opened the bowling and made Wayback earn their runs.
Parkyn had Wright caught at gully by Tom Gent and Wayback were in trouble early.
Tod River had their tails up when Davey had Hammond caught by Dalziel and Parkyn removed Matt Roberts, caught by Jake Sampson at point.
Wayback were 3/29 with the dangerous Kleinig scoring freely and desperately needing someone to form a partnership with him.
Kamron Clark was unable to stay at the crease long enough to form the stabilising partnership so desperately needed and was caught at point off the bowling of Parkyn, who was bowling a great spell. Shane Porter came and went, removed by a gem of a ball by Parkyn, caught by Stevens at first slip and Wayback were in deep trouble at 5/67.
Wilkinson came to the crease and with calculated stroke play and minimal running quickly turned the game in Wayback's favour.
Wayback had found the partnership they craved and Kleinig was his usual brutal self with no bowler escaping his punishment. Passing 50 he soon brought up his hundred with three consecutive sixes, a brilliant performance in a pressure situation.
The bowling change of Briggs brought the desired result with a searing delivery ripping Kleinig's stumps out of the ground, ending his innings on 114 and an 87-run partnership.
With Tod River looking to wrap up the innings Mark Wilkinson found support in Scott Dawson and then Trent George to move Wayback's score past 200.
The dismissal of Wilkinson for 46, caught by Gent on the boundary off the bowling of Davey, sparked a collapse with Todd Smart and then Darren Atkinson not wasting any ink in the score book to close the innings at 224.
Best bowlers were Davey with 4/27 off nine overs and Parkyn with 4/45 off nine overs.
Tod River opened the batting with McFarlane and Harris to the bowling of Matt Roberts and Mark Wilkinson and quickly compiled 43 runs off six overs with some clean hitting.
A bowling change brought an end to the onslaught with the ever reliable Shane Porter having McFarlane caught on the boundary by Wilkinson.
Well supported by Todd Smart bowling tightly from the other end, Wayback regained control of the game.
Sampson joined Harris but he didn't last long, caught behind by Dawson off the bowling of Porter, and it wasn't long until Porter struck again. Harris skied a ball to deep mid wicket only to see Brenton Hammond scurry around the boundary to take a brilliant catch.
Tod River were 3/64 and the game had tightened up. Tod River skipper David Hope was the next to go honoring Jeremy 'Jezzalenko' Wright's lead from the goal square to hit him lace out on the chest.
Gent joined Stevens, who was patiently building an innings and had started to get things back on track for the River boys.
This promising partnership was ended when Gent was deceived in flight by Atkins and was caught in the pocket by a fast moving Wright.
Low came and went, caught by Roberts off the bowling of Trent George, bringing Dalziel to the crease. He and Stevens helped steady the ship and with some controlled and lusty hitting got the target back to a run a ball.
Wayback needed to keep it tight and the skipper turned to the old warhorse Wright. He turned back the clock, came off the long run and much to the crowd on the hill's delight, removed Dalziel with a searing short ball fended to Hammond off his first ball.
This broke a 55-run partnership and with Tod River at 7/157 Wayback could smell victory.
Roberts wrapped Parkyn on the pads and had him out plumb LBW for a duck and the end was nigh. It was now up to Stevens, who had no choice but to have a crack, but unfortunately for the Toddy boys he spooned one off Wright to Clark in cover.
The end came quickly with Roberts bowling Briggs to the delight of the big crowd and Wayback were premiers with Tod River all out for 178.
Best bowlers were Porter with 4/24 off nine overs, Wright, 2/11 off three overs, and Roberts 2/37 off eight overs.
Congratulations to Tod River for a fantastic season and well played in a great grand final, and thank you to umpire Roy Tod.
