Tumby Bay 8/175 lost to Far West 6/176

FAR West travelled to Tumby Bay on Saturday and got their Henderson Shield campaign away to a positive start with an easy victory over the home side.

Batting first, Tumby Bay were on the back foot from the third ball of the innings, when Darren Brown found the edge of McInerney's defensive bat to give keeper Brendon Kloeden the first of his four catches for the innings.

In-form Lipson batsman Jordan Telfer joined Glenn Murphy in the middle and the pair put together a steady 38-run partnership before Theodosiou broke through in his first over removing Murphy, once again to a Kloeden catch.

Local captain Richard Murphy joined Telfer and was perilously close to departing first ball, when he shouldered arms to Theodosiou and was hit on the pads.

Murphy continued with his tactic of leaving as many deliveries as possible and it was no surprise when he lost his off-stump in Theodosiou's next over, again without offering a stroke.

Martin Baillie became Theodosiou's next victim, clean bowled first ball and all of a sudden Tumby Bay were 4/45 after 17 overs.

Young Luke Wilkins, playing his first Henderson Shield game, joined Telfer and together this pair managed to stem their collapse, taking the score to 92 before lunch was taken.

Steed Sutherland came into the attack soon after lunch, and bowled Wilkins with his first delivery, and when Jordan Telfer fell to the bowling of spinner Wade Sutherland soon after for 66, Tumby looked in trouble at 6/132 in over 40.

The situation became worse when Taris Richardson fell to the first ball he faced to the Kloeden/Brown combination and then the experienced Anesbury was bowled by a Wade Sutherland wrong-un to expose the tail end batsmen with the score on eight for 136.

But Pool, partnered by first gamer Jordan Allen, showed good fighting spirit to not only see out the remaining eight overs of the innings, but to push the score along at five runs per over, something that the top and middle order batsmen were unable to achieve.

Both remained not out at the conclusion of the 50 overs, Pool on 15 and Allen on 25, an extremely valuable 38-run partnership, taking their team's total to 8/175, well below what might have been predicted, but nevertheless, enough runs to give the bowlers a fighting chance of victory.

Theodosiou's 3/30 from 10 overs broke the back of the Tumby innings, while paceman Brown's 2/27 from 1-0, and Wade Sutherland's 2/30 from nine kept pressure on the home team's batsmen.

Jordan Telfer's 66 was by far the standout innings for Tumby, with Glenn Murphy (27) and Jordan Allen (25 not out) the best of the rest.

Far West's quest for victory looked simple enough, requiring only to score at 3.52 runs per over to achieve the win.

Openers Dillon Oats and C. Williams settled in confidently and appeared in no trouble against Tumby's new ball attack of Richardson and McCrorie.

They pushed the partnership to 31 before Williams was run out via a relayed throw from Richard Murphy to Richardson to keeper Telfer, attempting a fourth run.

Damien Johnson joined Oats, with Anesbury and Allen in the Tumby attack, and this pair of batsmen looked in no trouble in pushing the team score to 81 in the 23rd over, before Johnson fell to Anesbury and Oats followed soon after to the same bowler.

Bennett and Sutherland then followed in quick succession as spinners Anesbury and Glenn Murphy made inroads into the middle order, but Kloeden and Theodosiou were up to the task and not only saw off the Tumby spinners, but pushed the score along to 166 in the 44th over, before Theodosiou fell to Martin Baillie, the seventh bowler tried in the Tumby attack.

At 6/166, it was left to Kloeden and Darren Brown to coast home to victory with five overs to spare, leaving Kloeden unconquered on 49, a fine innings, which guided his team to final victory.

Jason Anesbury returned the best figures in the Tumby bowling attack, finishing with 3/26 from 10 overs, while Glenn Murphy and Martin Baillie chipped in with a wicket each.

It was a good victory for Far West in their "away" game and they will look forward to their second encounter, which will be played at home.

Man-of-the-match honours went the way of Far West's Brendon Kloeden who gave a polished performance behind the stumps with four catches and followed up with a fine innings of 49 not out to anchor the successful run chase.
