Race record smashed

05 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
THE beginning of November signalled the start of the Port Lincoln triathlon season.

The first event was the annual Coffin Bay Classic, a 45-kilometre bike race.

A tail wind helped the riders create a new race record for the journey.

Organiser Clayton Wells from Cluster Cycles sent the 15 riders off at one minute intervals.

Riders averaged speeds over 30 kilometres and hour as they sped along the highway to Coffin Bay.

First to reach Coffin Bay was new rider Paul Schuppan, in the great time of 1 hour 16 minutes. The fastest rider was Peter Sheridan, in the outstanding time of 1 hour 12 minutes, breaking the race record by seven and a half minutes (in fact the first eight riders all beat the old record).

Next was Andy Johns, who travelled from Ceduna for the event, and Wayne Smith finished third.

The fastest female was Sylvia Dansie, who completed the course in 1 hour 18 minutes.

Robin Dawson was the second female, followed by Karen McConnell.

Triathlon training begins this Sunday, November 8. All welcome.
