50 years since first Kinlough

01 Jul, 2009 11:30 PM
IT has been 50 years since the Kinlough Cup for under 17 footballers was first played in 1959 and this Saturday teams will compete for the cup at Cowell.

The 43rd annual Kinlough Cup will be hosted by Eastern Eyre where under 17 teams from six Eyre Peninsula associations will compete in a round robin competition.

Port Lincoln (Lincoln City and Lincoln Districts), Great Flinders, Eastern Eyre, Far West, Mid West and Whyalla will play for the championship cup.

The Kinlough Cup was conceived to foster senior colts football on Eyre Peninsula and at the first carnival in July 1959 there were teams competing from Great Flinders, Eastern Eyre and Port Lincoln.

Port Lincoln man Doug Glass, now 64, captained the Port Lincoln Kinlough team from 1959 to 1961 in which Port Lincoln was victorious for all three. He was also the first ever recipient of the Kinlough Cup fairest and most brilliant trophy in 1959 and looks back at the carnival with fond memories.

"The first year we played at Tumby Bay and there were two Port Lincoln teams, Lincoln Blue and Lincoln Red, Great Flinders and Eastern Eyre," Glass said.

"In 1960 we played at the old Ravendale complex and in 1961 at Cummins.

"We were undefeated for those three years and after Kinlough in 1961 they picked an EP team, which I captained, and we played the Port Adelaide under 16 team at Richmond Oval."

He said back in the early days of Kinlough, the Port Lincoln teams were picked from the four teams in the league, Lincoln South, Wayback, Tasman and Marble Range.

Glass also remembered learning a lot from some of Port Lincoln's greatest coaches in Max Harvey and Lawrie Casanova.

Kinlough Cup is named after Joe Kinlough who donated the cup and came from the Eastern Eyre region.
