WAYBACK ran out convincing 82-point victors over Mallee Park to keep their top two aspirations alive on Saturday.
The Demons asserted their authority early by posting the first four goals of the game and were never headed. Mallee Park were not able to kick consecutive goals at any stage of the game and were unable to produce their usual free flowing style of game.
Weather conditions were perfect for football with no wind advantage to either end. The Centenary Oval surface was a little slippery under foot due to recent rains, which saw many players lose their footing and go to ground throughout the day.
Wayback opened the scoring after a tackle from Kelson resulted in Kay finding Vogelsanger on the lead. Kelsh goaled soon from 40 metres after receiving a holding the ball free.
The Peckers were in early trouble early with two players leaving the field with injuries in the first 10 minutes. It was evident early the Peckers were missing the experience and ball winning ability of Harry Miller and Tessman. They had a very young team with 12 under 21 players, including a number who had already played in the senior colts.
Goals to Keatley and Smith had the Demons take an early four-goal lead.
The Peckers' forward forays had been rare and when they did threaten they were repelled by the Demons' defence, led by Cunningham and Lynch. Phil Dudley provided the only highlight for the Peckers in the first stanza with a mark on a long lead. He kicked truly to register a late goal, however Mallee Park faced a three-goal margin at the first change.
The second term was almost a carbon copy of the first with Wayback kicking the first four goals. Dudley again showed he had his kicking boots on by converting truly to register the Peckers' only goal of the term.
Kelsh replied with his third goal of the term to extend the lead for the Demons to 47 points at the main break.
Wayback exerted a high level of pressure all over the ground and this took its toll on the young Pecker runners. Kelson, Kay, Davidson and Keatley were instrumental in the midfield for the Demons. Vogelsanger and Kelsh were proving dangerous up forward with three goals apiece for the half and as an added bonus Wayback found their radar in front of goal for the first time for the year, registering 10 goals for the half from 12 scoring shots.
Devlin Walsh and Joseph Burgoyne were trying hard in the midfield but the Peckers were outnumbered at contests all over the ground. Ky Miller was used in a number of positions and was one their better contributors.
The Peckers were forced to use Ainsley Betts in defence to try to stem the flow of Demon goals.
Phillip Dudley started the third term in the midfield in an attempt to get into the game as he was being starved of opportunities up forward.
The third term produced more of the same with four goals to Wayback without reply. Kelsh and Cragg-Sapsford provided two goals apiece for the term.
The game was all over as a contest at the last change.
Wayback added another four goals to complete their best four quarter display for the year. It was an even team performance that keeps the Demons within striking distance of the all important second position.
Ky Miller was busy in the last term after being moved forward and had a number of shots on goal, being rewarded with the Peckers' only goal for the quarter.
The game was one that Mallee Park would prefer to forget, with nothing appearing to go right. They will welcome back some much needed experienced players after this week's break and they would expect to improve substantially as a result.
Two losses in a row means the Peckers will need to defeat the top team Lincoln South in their next game to stay in contention for second position and the coveted double chance.
