THE Mallee Park Peckers showed they have started fine tuning for the finals with three games to go when they overran the Tasman Roosters to win by 105 points at home on Saturday.
While the Roosters were well short of their best list with Zac and Jarred Christian, Craig Reinke, Michael Kilsby and Glen Tonkin unavailable, or out through injury, and ruckman Jake Stoll reported to be playing with the under 18s for Port Adelaide, the Pecker run and carry game was back at full tilt, and they had the luxury of naming 24 players.
Their biggest problem was who to leave out, and the return of Barry Johncock Jnr gave them another key target up forward.
The Peckers' Harry Miller was back to his blasting best, combined with Ainsley Betts and Jeremy Jackamarra, the total possessions of these three players would have numbered over the century mark, something the Australian Test side could do with.
The Peckers' first quarter score of 6-6 became 12 by the long break with Ky Miller kicking four and Barry Johncock two.
The league's leading goal kicker, Phillip Dudley, was kept down to one goal in the first half and was well contained by Calvin Daniels, one of the Rooster's young guns who continues to show big improvement every game.
By the end of the third quarter Dudley had kicked his second goal but with the Peckers' run and carry game in full blast Dudley broke loose in the last quarter to kick all of the six goals to finish with eight.
Daniels' effort was recognised by coach Ron Evans and he was named best on ground for the Roosters, and the coach was also pleased with the effort of Jared Milton on centre wing and Lachlan Hollitt was tenacious in his attack on ball and contest.
Senior players Ross Campbell and Matt James tried valiantly to lift and lead their team with Jared Milton hard at the footy and worked overtime with success in holding up the run of the Peckers several times through the midfield.
When Tasman did get the ball forward through the rock hard midfield, Aisea Raikiwasa, Matt Parker, Matt Davies, Ross Campbell, Kurt Wisniewski and Craig Bascombe made the most of limited chances to kick a goal each.
