THE Great Flinders Football League has invited representatives from the Eastern Eyre Football League to talk about a possible merger.
The discussion will take place at the next Great Flinders regular league meeting on July 20.
Merger talks within each league so far have been positive and the next step is to get the two leagues together to discuss the suggestion further.
Earlier this month, the Eastern Eyre league approached the Great Flinders league about the future of football on Eyre Peninsula due to dwindling player numbers.
Two weeks ago, Great Flinders president Grant Beard said Great Flinders wouldn't dismiss the idea out of hand but no proposal had been drawn up yet.
Eastern Eyre league president Graham Woolford said talks were originally prompted from the Cleve Football Club to merge with Ports or Rudall, and fears that a merger would reduce club numbers within the Eastern Eyre competition had prompted the league's approach to Great Flinders.
He said without a league merger, clubs would fold due to a lack of player numbers.
He also said he would like to see the merger happen next season and talks within Eastern Eyre had been positive and had included the netball association.
A merger between the two leagues would possibly result in an eight-team competition with Eastern Eyre producing three sides and five sides from Great Flinders.
