GREAT Flinders won their third successive Mortlock Shield carnival on the weekend, beating Eastern Eyre in the final to take the title.
About 1800 people turned up for the annual two-day carnival at Centenary Oval in Port Lincoln, which the Maroons have made their own in recent years.
Great Flinders made the final by beating Port Lincoln by a point in their first game on Saturday, and then coming out to win over Mid West in extra time in the final game on Saturday.
Confusion reigned after the final siren had sounded on Saturday, but the decision was made that both teams had to come back out and play an extra five minutes each end, and Great Flinders came away with the points.
Eastern Eyre had a simpler run into the final; in their first game on Saturday they easily accounted for Far West and then had a convincing win over Whyalla to sit on top of the table Saturday night.
On Monday, Port Lincoln thrashed Far West in the first game, Mid West scored an easy win over Whyalla in the second game and Great Flinders won the last game, and the shield.
