THE Maroon jumper of Great Flinders upheld its champion status yesterday afternoon when the side accounted for a game long commitment from Eastern Eyre in the final game of this year’s ABB Mortlock Shield.
Great Flinders took out their third successive Mortlock title for what is believed to be the third time in the carnival’s history.
The Maroons, with four goals in the first quarter, were never headed and maintained a lead of 19 points until the last quarter, when Eastern Eyre closed the deficit to nine points.
In the closing minutes, EP champion Simon Pedler sealed Great Flinders their third consecutive win with two overhead contested marks to kick the last two goals.
It was a fitting finish for a great team and a great player.
Eastern Eyre can hold their heads high; they stuck to the task and to challenge strongly in the last quarter in what is surely a proud moment for their league and supporters.
The Mortlock tradition of hard and fast football was maintained from the first siren until the last, and ultimately, Great Flinders again proved they are the best on Eyre Peninsula.
