WHILE every game is important, this contest is the biggest challenge of the season for the Roosters.
With three wins they are one win behind Bostons and must win to stay in touch to play in September.
The Eagles, on two wins, mathematically can still make the finals, but this is the last roll of the dice for the Eagles and this fact should make this game a one of pride, or it will add up to what could have been.
The Eagles won the last battle of the birds by two points, kicking 11-5 to 9-15 and this is where club pride comes into play.
The Eagles’ Andrew Jericho has become the Rock of Gibraltar and was best on ground against the Roosters, and has repeatedly given in his best in recent games.
The lively Jay Williams up front and on the ball, along with Dylan Dunn, Phillip Cummins and Jayden Stoetzer, and the possible return of Andrew North, are the players that did the damage up front with two goals each, and the Roosters will have to be accountable against this forward mix.
The Eagles are also looking strong in the ruck with Michael Bates, and his contest with Rooster Sam DuBois and the possible return of Craig Bascombe will be all important. The Roosters duo will have to produce their best to contain an in form Bates.
The Rooster midfielders in Matt James and Adam Vonow can give the Roosters the momentum to get the ball forward and therein lies the Roosters’ big problem; do the Roosters have the forwards to apply scoreboard pressure?
With Glen Tonkin out for the season they are left with one tall marking forward, Johan Wagner, and will rely on Ross Campbell to play more up forward.
Michael Kilsby, who kicked three goals last week against the Peckers, adds strength and Jarred Christian must come under consideration to go forward.
Matt James and Adam Vonow will also be required to kick running goals.
Mitch Dalziel and Nathan Frost look likely to return and Peter Davey gives the Roosters a much stronger look.
Both clubs have failed to play four quarters, and a dour struggle with total commitment with head and body over the ball will be the order of the day from both coaches.
Tip: the Roosters could play an unknown player and finding out the mystery player’s name is like talking to a politician.
It’s a tough call and with both clubs hoping old Blue doesn’t tip them, one could say “to hell with it”.
With so much riding on the result the Roosters have everything to play for and if they don’t win, they don’t deserve to play in the finals. Roosters to win.
