 Tigers tear up premiers

Tigers tear up premiers

15 Jul, 2008 12:08 PM
THE Boston Tigers, for the second time this season, beat the reigning premiers, Marble Range, in a dour and physical contest at Poole Oval by two points, and are now equal with Tasmans on three wins, who lost to Waybacks by 12 points.

Tasmans and Bostons share fourth spot on points with Tasmans officially in fourth spot by a percentage of only 1.99.

With a strong cross wind making ball handling skills difficult, the Rangers were clearly dominating at the start, continually going forward, but they failed to capitalise in applying scoreboard pressure by kicking only two goals from seven shots to hold a lead of 17 points at the first change, while keeping the Tigers scoreless.

The Tigers responded in the second quarter with a more aggressive attack on the ball, with best on ground Michael Franklin finding plenty of the ball through the midfield, along with Jack Arbon and Rhys Marsh, and Malcolm Miller came into the game. Brett Watherston at centre half back, on key forward Jarrod Doudle, was also on top in this quarter.

Bostons made no mistakes when they went forward, posting five goals and the lone point while keeping the Rangers down to one goal.

The Rangers again failed to make the most of their chances by missing easy shots on goal and finished with another two points, to end the half with seven points from 10 shots on goal.

The game tightened right up in the vital third term with no quarter given and none asked as both teams battled hard in what was a goal-less period.

The Tigers, with a narrow seven-point lead to start the last quarter, were on the road to causing another upset against the reigning premiers, and had to withstand an all out effort from the Rangers. The experience of Tigers captain Brett Watherston, who led his Tigerish back half with distinction, paved the way for the Tigers to keep a very committed Rangers down to one goal while equalling that goal.

Again the Rangers had their chance to seal victory but kicked two points; chances missed are chances lost but one cannot deny the Tigers the game.

Levi Smith’s run off the back half of the midfield gave the Rangers plenty of thrust, Jarrod Doudle kicked two goals, Tod Owen and Stephen Tokarski did everything asked of them to lift their team, and Jason O’Brien, with one goal, worked hard all game.

Matt Haradene and Tyler Dennis both paid their way with strong and committed contributions.

The Tigers’ Malcolm Miller showed he knows how to share the ball and with Michael Franklin, continually brought the runners into the game.

Troy Smith up forward proved to be yet again a valuable asset with two goals, but unfortunately he had to leave the ground in the last term with possible concussion.

Rhys Marsh, Darrin Bryant and Sunny Singh, with a goal each, made the most of their chances, and a Malcolm Miller special was the difference in a tough, tight contest with only 11 goals kicked in total in the blustery wind.

Bostons’ win paves the way for a chance to play in September and their training effort, by all reports, on Thursday night appears to have been a major factor in their second win over the Rangers.

The loss by the Rangers now has them three wins behind Mallee Park and the probability is they will have to win their six remaining games to have any chance of gaining the much valued double chance.

One must be careful not to write the Rangers off to win three premierships in a row, but the pen and paper are ready to do so.
