WANT an Eyre Peninsula person to be the South Australian footy legend for 2008, winning their club $5000?
Then vote for one of the nominees - Darcy Harvey (Wayback Football Club), David Stoeckel (Tasman FC), Gloria Watherston (Boston FC), Ian Burrows (Lock FC) and Jonathon Mills (Cowell FC).
They have been nominated for the Telstra Country Footy Legends and now it’s up to the public to decide on the finalists who continue on the path to possibly win $5000 for their footy team.
This year marks David Stoeckel’s 10th year with Tasmans, where he played A grade before taking a year off and then getting back into it, playing for the reserves, this year being his second year.
For three years he coached A grade while playing and for the past four years he has coached the under 12s (now under 13s).
He received the Mail Medal in 1999 and also that year played in the Eyre Peninsula team that took out the Country Championship.
Coaching has also involved being association coach and Port Lincoln City coach for three years.
Mr Stoeckel spent 13 years with South Adelaide in the SANFL, playing 266 games, kicking 400 goals, being captain for two years and being made a life member of the club and SANFL.
Gloria Watherston is a Boston Football Club foundation member, with her four sons playing for the club and now two grandsons playing in the A grade team and a great-grandson in under nines.She has been a committee member for 36 years and is in her 16th year as treasurer of the ladies committee.
In 1996 she was awarded life membership and is one of four members of “Bobs” - Boston Old Boilers - who, at an average age of 82, have amassed some 144 years service.
She has been a prime mover in fundraising ventures, including introducing ladies indoor bowls at the club 26 years ago.
Darcy Harvey has been with Waybacks since 1937, and has been recognised with club membership and with a 50-year service award by the AFL.
In 1946 he was the inaugural winner of the Gynell Medal for the fairest and most brilliant player in the Port Lincoln Football League, and also Wayback’s best and fairest.
He has served on club committees, been A grade captain and coach, coached reserves and colts, and as a member of the EP team came runner-up in 1953.
