Men's A
WANDERERS had their season ended in the first round of hockey finals on Saturday while Panthers will play Marauders in this week's preliminary final.
First semi final, Panthers def Wanderers 3-1
Panthers won in a close game that saw both teams dominate at different periods of the game, with Panthers capitalising on more chances.
Max Williams had a top day for Panthers in goals with a number of spectacular slides, while brothers Shane and Grant Paull combined well for Panthers with a great display of attacking hockey.
Wanderers scored through Brad Giles, who bounced back from a taxing week, as he made life difficult for the Panthers defenders.
Darryl Atkinson and Matt Chambers created a number of opportunities for their Wanderers team-mates while Tom Bayly ran hard all day.
Panthers are through to the preliminary final this week while Wanderers get an extra week to plan for next season.
Second semi final, Flinders def Marauders 5-3
It was billed as match of the day and so it was, with Flinders and Marauders fighting for the right to go straight into the men's A grade grand final.
If hockey used point posts both sides would have gone into double figures with a stunning array of goal scoring opportunities at both ends.
In a best on ground performance Sam Vanderwal led Flinders with a brilliant display of pace and skill and he had plenty of mates in top form with Colin Whillas and Justion Braakhuis also playing well.
Marauders fought hard with Matt Fisher and Todd Foreman combining well in defence. Flinders were able to get ahead on the scoreboard briefly but Marauders kept finding ways to level the scores including a stunning goal-scoring move started by Daniel Mitchell and finished by Todd Smart, which brought the crowd to their feet.
Just when it looked like extra time might be required to break the deadlock, Flinders scored twice in quick succession to put the game beyond Marauders' reach and booked one of the two vacant spots in the grand final.
Women's A
First semi final, Marauders def Panthers 3-1
Panthers were no match for Marauders in their elimination final on Saturday and without their full side it was always going to be a struggle.
Marauders applied pressure right from the start and ground out a result that propels them into the preliminary final next week.
Carolyn Coulson scored for Panthers while Kelsy and Ashleigh Dyer asserted themselves in the Marauders forward line with three goals between them.
With Andrea Broadfoot playing well at full back and launching plenty of counter-attacks, Marauders have lots of goal-scoring choices when mid-fielders Kiah Hosking and Fiona Kavanagh are looking to deliver the ball, and the Greens look well set for next week's match against Flinders.
For Panthers, Tammy Shepherd and Bec Simpson did a heap of work in the midfield with Jess Harrison tireless in defence.
Second semi final, Wanderers def
Flinders 3-2
The top of the table clash between Wanderers and Flinders, with a grand final spot on offer, saw a hard fought game between two very good sides, neither of whom looked like giving the other side an even break.
Jodie Hamilton-Reid was back for the Blues and in goal-scoring form with Samorn Stockham playing a crucial role in the midfield and Ally Smart having a good day in goals.
Flinders knew they had a good chance to progress with the return of several quality players and they gave themselves every chance with Ceylena Holloway and Elise Clem each scoring for the Maroons.
Extra time was needed after a 2-2 draw.
Wanderers scored early in first 10 minutes of extra time and despite Flinders having plenty of chances, including a short corner played out after the final whistle - they were unable to equalise and gave Wanderers the one way ticket to the Premiership game. Flinders will be looking to regroup and dispatch the fast finishing Marauders in the preliminary final to give themselves another crack at Wanderers in the grand final.
Men's B
First semi final, Marauders def Flinders 10-0
The game finished about as expected with Flinders desperately short of players and defending as best they could.
Travis Ween scored a hat-trick for Marauders as did Brodie Kavanagh, and they had plenty of other goal scorers as well.
For Flinders Wayne Harvey and Lloyd Carr worked hard all day but there were just too many green uniforms to get past.
Wayne Hocking continued his good form in the midfield for Marauders and Brad Lawson arrived at the right game this week to contribute with a goal and some sterling attacking play. Marauders will be hoping to take this goal-scoring form into the preliminary final this week against Wanderers.
Second semi final, Panthers def Wanderers 5-0
Panthers and Wanderers played their qualifying semi-final in the heat of the day and it showed with players from both sides flagging early and looking to make the ball do most of the work.
Rohan Pretorius was magnificent for Panthers this week with three goals despite a first half hiccup, which saw him off the field for five minutes to contemplate the merits of playing the ball with his foot.
For Wanderers Jason Stockham carried the ball nicely through the midfield setting up plenty of attacking opportunities and the game was pretty even in the first half.
Panthers got on top early in the second half and never looked back with Raj Dhaliwal dominating all over the field and Greg Williams playing well in short bursts between visits to the change-rooms for a cup of tea and a lie down on several occasions.
Panthers get the week off and a chance to look at their likely grand final opponents.
Women's B
First semi final, Marauders drew with Flinders 1-1
Marauders and Flinders fought out a one-all draw in their elimination semi-final on Friday night in ideal conditions, with Marauders going through to the preliminary final because of their higher position on the ladder at the end of the minor round.
Both sides put everything into this game, each fearing it could be their last for the season, and there was a bit of "rufty tufty" on display from both sides.
Extra time was needed, but neither team scored, which sent Marauders scraping through on percentage to the next round.
Veronica Mitchell scored for the Greens and Toni Ford scored for Flinders, with both of them in the best players for their respective teams as well. Marauders will now play Wanderers in the preliminary final this week.
Second semi final, Panthers def Wanderers 5-0
Panthers turned on a powerful display in the heat of the day with a strong win over second-placed Wanderers in their women's B grade semi-final on Saturday.
Wanderers struggled to give themselves opportunities to score with a couple of players down on form and looking forward to getting back on the scoreboard next week.
For Panthers it was a solid team effort with five separate goal scorers and excellent contributions from their seasoned campaigners.
Shelley Turner turned it on again for Panthers by scoring their opening goal and Julie Hyde was superb in defence with excellent contributions from the whole team.
For Wanderers, Dawn Stockham and Leonie O'Brien did their best to stem the tide and their only consolation was that Panthers had to work hard for every goal.
Wanderers will be looking to re-group against Marauders in the preliminary final.
