PORT Lincoln is a Regional Centre of Excellence (RCE) for hockey and has more than 40 local participants involved in the program.
Coordinator Phill Foreman and his helpers have established a program to groom them into the best hockey players they can be.
Hockey is a winter sport and when competition wrapped up in September, this dedicated group was selected to take part in the RCE.
The RCE program began at the start of school term 4 and continues until the end of term 1 next year.
Mr Foreman said not only were the participants talented but they also showed good mental attitude and commitment.
There are five groups in the program that train over Monday and Tuesday nights. The under 13, under 16, under 21, high performance group and a goalkeeper group.
As well as honing in on their skills, the participants are involved in a stringent fitness regime and will also have sessions with local dieticians and physiotherapists.
Trainer s from the Adelaide University Hockey Club are flying in to run a skills session and the Hockey SA development unit will visit.
Mr Foreman said the RCE was in its second year and aimed to prepare the participants for State trials.
"We try to make it so that when they go to State trials, they're well prepared and not overawed by what they have to do.
"We had a fairly good success rate of kids making State teams this year and we'd like to see if we can improve on that."
Part of the RCE involves fitness testing and at the end of the program they will compare the tests to measure improvement.
Video footage of the players is taken and the local players compare their skills and actions to that of a Kookaburra or Hockeyroo.
The Port Lincoln City Council has also contributed to the RCE by giving the program a $4000 boost to set up a weights room.
"Port Lincoln is leading the way in regional hockey ... we've got so much untapped talent here," Mr Foreman said.
