Great Flinders netball
Preliminary finals
A grade, Eyre United v United Yeelanna
THE main game of the day should be an exciting contest between Eyre United and an in-form Yeelanna.
Rounds one and two saw Eyre United having a win but in the final minor round game it was a draw.
On each occasion, the game has been tight with Eyre United in front for the majority of the game but struggling to break away.
This game could be dependent on the clashes in the two goal circles with key match ups in this area. One will be between the height and intercepting ability of the experienced Heather Norton of Yeelanna and the accurate shooting of Hayley Masson for Eyre United.
Eyre United's goalies, Masson and Chelsea Baillie, might find the court presence of Yeelanna's tall defenders, Chelsea Mickan and Norton, quite restricting, cutting their ability to move freely in the goal circle.
Tegan Modra, another tall defender for Yeelanna, could also line up at goal defence and create problems with her height and intercepting ability.
Chelsea Baillie's ability to create space is pivotal to Eyre United's success in the goal circle, as is the patience of the feeders, Brooke Pugsley and Sarahanne Lewis.
Both mid-courters run hard all game for Eyre United and have the ability to keep the game moving at their pace and style of netball.
Sasha Stratford adds a steely determination at wing defence to bring the ball strongly out of defence.
Yeelanna's Jac Hage through the centre is a determined and hard working attacking player who is a driving force through the centre court. She will combine with captain Kate Hancock who excels in wing attack with her ability to find space and vision into the goalies.
Marissa Evans will create problems in defence for Eyre United with her height and anticipation and will probably line up against Yeelanna's Alyssa Jolly, who is a quick mover with strong hands and excellent positioning skills.
The game will be dependent on which team is able to dominate the goal circles and should keep the spectators on the edge of their seats.
A reserves
Cummins Kapinnie v Tumby Bay
Cougars will go into this game slight favourites having won two out the three minor round games against Tumby Bay this season, and keen to win after last Saturday's close loss to Ramblers.
Tumby Bay has Amy Clarke and Erin Bubner back in the team after recovering from an ankle injury and an overseas holiday strengthening their team.
Tumby goalies Amy Clarke, Blaise Baldiserra or Prue Harris could line up against Amii Warner, Cougars' best and fairest or runner-up Mardi Green. Cougars also have the option of using Nola Rodgers in the defence circle as well as Bonnie Puckridge or Kelsey Mullan out at wing defence.
Cougars' experienced midcourt in Celia Mickan will reward her team with hard work as would Bonnie Puckridge, Kelsey Mullan or Mikaela Howell given the opportunity.
Tumby Bay have an equally strong midcourt that includes Tumby's best and fairest Leanne Higgins, runner-up Therese Montgomerie and Erin Bubner, all of which find space and deliver the ball accurately.
Cougars have the luxury of having three goalie options in Josie Turnbull, Rachelle Warner or best and fairest runner-up Ellie-Mae Siegert.
This game could be a battle of the defences with both teams having accurate shooters and speed through the midcourt, in what could be a tight tussle.
B grade
Cummins Kapinnie v Ramblers
Cougars and Ramblers have had great tussles this season with Cougars coming out on top in all three instances but this week's preliminary final should display some great match-ups.
In Cougars' goal circle, the experienced Joz Phelps and the young Sarah Nicholls have developed a successful combination and both shoot with great accuracy.
Ramblers' defence combination of Jessica Harkness at goal defence and goal keeper Rosy Boylan will be determined to make the Cougars goalies work hard for their possessions. Ramblers' Rosy Boylan will have the height advantage in the defence circle and will apply plenty of pressure over the ball.
Through the midcourt Ramblers will have Simone Skipworth at wing defence, the experienced Kerry Claughton at centre and Elly Fitzgerald at wing attack. Claughton and Fitzgerald will drive hard onto the circle to feed into their goalies Deery and Lawrie.
Jenna Hughes, Pennie Hazelgrove and Jayme Koch will provide great drive through the centre for Cougars. All are versatile players with good ball skills who are capable of being rotated around to provide fresh legs through the midcourt.
Cougars' defence will be led by strong defender Jacqui Phelps and the youngster Aylish Nelligan.
This should be a good match-up against Ramblers' accurate goalies Samantha Deery and Tatum Lawrie, who took the court last Saturday in the A reserves game. Maddy Richardson will also make it hard for the Ramblers goalies in defence. Experienced playing coach Chaz Letton is a strong versatile player who could quite possibly take the court at either end if needed.
Cougars will be keen to win after their loss last Saturday, only their second loss all season. This should be a good game to watch.
B reserves
Cummins Kapinnie v Tumby Bay
Cougars and Tumby have met three times with Cougars winning on each occasion.
Tumby Bay will be without youngster Ellen Walker who is unavailable. Lining up in goals for Tumby will probably be captain Tracey Couper who directs play and is a great team leader.
She will combine with Kimberley Matthews who is a tall goalie with a great reach for rebounds. Cougars defenders Jayne Trezise and Lynne Davies will be strong back in the defence circle and will not allow much to get pass them.
Shay Kimber will also work hard in defence for Cougars.
Working through the midcourt for Tumby could be the versatile Sam Griffiths and best and fairest runner-up Melissa Hammill who is a quick midcourter. Cougars also have a strong midcourt with Sarah Adamson, Jodie Black and playing coach Tash Puckridge all providing plenty of drive.
In defence for Tumby could be best and fairest Paula Richter, a strong defender who reads the play extremely well, and Leah Cooper who has a steadying influence on the court. They will challenge Cougars' accurate goalies Milly Tosold and Caro Meyers who have a good understanding in the ring.
Whichever team's defence can get on top early and restrict passes into the goal circle could book a grand final berth against Eyre United.
