Imperials def Souths United 60-21
IN cool conditions, Imperials had a full strength team against the winless Souths United.
Imperials' focus for the game was to improve on their fluency in ball movement, as the competition moves into the second half of the season.
Jemma Stott and Francis were in goals for Imperials with their outstanding midcourt of Siegert, Gale and Shillabeer to feed them.
Tara Stott and Flack were the defensive unit.
Souths United's goalies were Gray and Wilson, with Connolly, Matena and Singh in the midcourt while Nield and Kartinyeri were goal defence and keeper for Souths United.
After leading by only one goal mid way through the first quarter, Imperials took control of the game in the final seven minutes to shoot five of the final six goals of the quarter.
At quarter time Imperials led 12-7.
At quarter time Jemma Stott and Francis changed positions to try and gain ascendancy in their goal circle against Nield and Kartinyeri.
The first five minutes of the second quarter was a very even contest with both teams scoring four goals.
From nowhere and with no warning, Imperials took complete control of the game to score 12 of the next 13 goals as every Imperials player won their position convincingly in the final 10 minutes.
Changes occurred at half time: Singh came off for Souths due to an injury, Curtis went to centre with Matena to wing defence.
For Imperials, Butterick went to goal defence, Tara Stott to wing defence and the super agile Shillabeer to centre.
The first seven minutes of the third quarter was again a very even contest with both teams scoring five goals, then Shillabeer took complete control of the midcourt with several spectacular interceptions to change the game entirely.
Again Imperials raised the bar to score nine of the final 11 goals for the quarter.
At three quarter time, Flack went to goal defence with Butterick to goal keeper.
Again Souths United matched the intensity of Imperials early in the final quarter before the Imperials juggernaut hit with massive force.
Imperials scored the final 16 goals of the quarter to run out very easy winners 60-21.
Imperials were a very even team, with the highlights being the spectacular intercepts by Shillabeer. Her awareness and ability to read the play to gain intercepts was ultra impressive.
For Souths United consistency needs to be their main focus for the remainder of the year.
Their best is as good as the other teams, but they are unable to maintain it for long periods.
Imperials are the second best team at this stage of the season, but still need to improve further to reduce the gap between them and Wanilla.
Paige Murphy and Pam Curtis umpired well in conditions that weren't always conducive to fluent netball.
