Henderson to captain Australia

05 Nov, 2009 12:30 AM
PORT Lincoln inline hockey player Mitch Henderson will captain the Australian 16 and under inline skating team to play in new Zealand next year.

Henderson was selected captain when three Port Lincoln inline skaters participated in the South Australian teams at the national competition held at the Midland Speed Dome, Perth from September 26 to October 3.

Five other players from Port Lincoln were invited but were unable to attend after selection at the State titles in June.

Nine divisions playing a total of 130 games were contested over the eight-day tournament. SA sent their smallest team for some time, competing in seven divisions, gaining gold in senior women, bronze in 11 and under, 15 and under, and 21 and under. The 13 and under and 17 and under came a creditable fourth.

Nathan Poole, playing for the first time in a national competition, joined Bodie Henderson and ex Port Lincoln player Cody Ackland in the 13 and under team. They lost their first game against Western Australia 1-5 with Bodie scoring the goal for his team.

The team settled as they adapted to the sports surface and had a good win against a combined Tasmania/Victoria team 7-1 with Bodie scoring two and Nathan one.

Up against the Victorians Bodie was again able to score but the team went down 2-9. Unfortunately two more defeats against the larger teams Queensland and WA put them out of medal contention but a good win (4-2) against Tasmania sealed their fourth placing.

Trips to Fremantle Goal, Perth City and Scarbourgh kept the team busy and entertained between games.

Mitch Henderson played in two divisions, the 15 and under and 17 and under teams. The 15 and under team played minor rounds for: 2-4 Qld, 4-6 Vic, 1-4 WA, 3-5 WA.

A good team effort for the final game resulted in a bronze medal 4-3 against WA. Mitch was inspirational directing the game in defence and setting up the goals scored.

The 17 and under team had only seven skaters and a goalie, four of those played in two divisions and therefore took some time to settle. Results: 1-4 WA, 0-11 Vic, 3-3 NSW, 3-2 Qld, 1- 5 Qld. Playing off for fourth place the team rallied and skated strongly in good spirits to win 9-0 over NSW.

Many of the final games went to time on and a few to penalty shoot out to the enjoyment of the crowd. Victoria were awarded the most successful state by one point from Queensland who have, as a state, made a huge commitment toward their team's success.

At the end of the competition, the national teams were announced with Mitch successfully named in the 16 and under team. He is the only team member from SA and was notified last week of his selection as captain for the team.

Mitch will travel to New Plymouth, New Zealand, in April for the Oceania Championships and is reserve for the junior men team for worlds in Germany in June. This is an 18 and under age group and only one other SA player has been named in the team.

Bodie Henderson is reserve for the 14 and under team for Oceanias and hopes to join two other team members from SA in New Zealand also.

Nathan enjoyed his national experience and gained confidence playing with the team. He is now set to play in the 13 and under age group again in 2010 when SA is set to host the nationals in Adelaide.
