Qualified for world titles

27 Jan, 2010 11:30 PM
TWO local girls have qualified to compete in Poland later this year as part of the Australian sailing team at the 2010 World Championships.

The Port Lincoln girls Ashleigh Dyer, 14, (skipper) and Georgina Hughes, 12, (crew) recently had a fantastic result at the 48th International Cadet Class Australian National Championship in Adelaide where they finished seventh overall which qualified them for the Australian team.

It would be the first international event for the girls and both were very excited to be invited.

"I didn't think we'd get anywhere near qualifying, we were just aiming for the top 20," Ashleigh said.

"If we do get to go, it would be at Puck in Poland which I know is very windy and good for sailing."

Both girls have been sailing since a young age, and zipped through the water on their boat Life to the Xtreme at the Cadet regatta in Adelaide.

Both hope to be able to attend the international event in July this year, but a decision on their attendance has yet to be made.

Meanwhile, other Port Lincoln sailors also performed well at the national regatta in Adelaide where 85 boats from all over Australia competed in some extreme conditions.

Mark Barwick and his crew Lauren Henderson sailed Pepsea and came 38th overall while Pagon Henley and her crew Tamara Barker sailed Full Speed Ahead and came in 64th as Luke Polomka and his crew Jade Forbes finished close behind in 66th.
