Results down to games in tight encounter

Yallunda Flat Kookaburras 15 rubbers 63 games defeated Yeelanna 15 rubbers 55 games

FOR the second week in a row, results of one of the matches was decided by only games in Great Flinders Table Tennis.

Yeelanna played Yallunda Flat Kookaburras at Yeelanna and from the start both sides gave their all in a close encounter, Kookaburras fighting to keep in touch with the top four on the ladder.

All 10 first round singles were either four or five setters (four to four sets) in a tight context, Yeelanna just edging ahead to take six to Kookaburras four.

Richard Hennell started the night by defeating Lester Barnes in a five setter: 10-12, 11-4,11-2,8-11,11-6.

June Leedham finished the round successfully for Yeelanna defeating Alan Hodgeskin in another five setter: 15-13, 10-12, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7.

Kookaburras took the advantage in the doubles and the second round of singles to be one rubber up, going into the tiered doubles.

The Barnes, Lester, Aiden and Celestine, with Geoff McLachlan gave Yeelanna the start they needed by winning the first two rubbers, Geoff and Celestine's close five setter saw them defeat Wayne Carr and Carmel Sheehan 7-11, 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9.

However, Kookaburras come back and when they won the final rubber they clinched victory by eight games.

Best for Kookaburras with wins in both singles and one double were Richard Hennell, Mike Bradford, Carmel Sheehan and Leon Prime.

Yeelanna's Greg Hurrell also won two singles and one double.

Karkoo Hawks 16 rubbers 56 games defeated Cummins 14 rubbers 53 games

Cummins were again involved in a close finish this week but unfortunately for them, as last week were unable to pick up the points.

However, for their opponents Karkoo Hawks the win means they stay on equal points with Panthers and Wanilla and only one win behind second placed Yeelanna.

The competition was even all night, Cummins top order giving them a good start but then it was Hawks lower order who put them back on track, giving them 6 rubbers to Cummins 4.

At the end of the second round of singles, Hawks were just one rubber ahead.

They won the first two rubbers, before Cummins again fought back to take the next tow.

When Hawks Chris Kelly and Jakobi Modra won a close four setter against Janice Fuss and Belinda Wise 10-12, 11-6, 11-9, 12-10 this enabled them to claim the points.

Final scores were 16 rubbers 56 games to `14 rubbers 53 games.

Neil and Margaret Carr with Chris Kelly were undefeated for Hawks, while Jarrod Hill, Vince Diment and Staffan continued their good form for Cummins to each win their four rubbers.

Wanilla 25 rubbers 80 games defeated Karkoo Panthers 5 rubbers 30 games.

Wanilla made sure they retain their spot in the top four of the ladder, with a comfortable victory against Karkoo Panthers.

They got off to a flying start and maintained their lead.Panthers made them work for their success, particularly in the doubles.

In the first round four were played to four sets and Wanilla's Doug Luckraft and Eric Fiegert fought out a five setter with Gladys Hall and Carolyn Miller, winning 11-8, 11-9, 11-13, 7-11, 11-8.

After winning four of the tiered doubles, Wanilla finished with a score of 25 rubbers 80 games to Panthers 5 rubbers 30 games.

It was a team effort from Wanilla, while for Panthers Vicki Mundy was their best, being undefeated.

Yallunda Flat Yabbies 28 rubbers 87 games defeated Edillilie 2 rubbers 9 games

Edillilie's new player Jake Qunitel tried his best for his side, winning both singles, as they were defeated by a stronger Yabbies.

In his first single he won against Gundy Elliott in a five setter 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7 and then defeated Marg Hutton in four sets 11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 13-11.

Final scores were 28 rubbers 87 games to 2 rubbers 9 games.
