Port Lincoln junior tennis

THE tennis association experienced its most amazing week this season with the visit to Port Lincoln by world number 11 Samantha Stosur along with officials from Tennis Australia and Tennis SA to open our newly resurfaced courts.

It was an awesome day and one that our committee can be proud of especially to receive a cheque for $64,000, which will go towards further improvements to our facilities.

Players are reminded this weekend we will be playing host to the Be Active Cup tournament, which will be held on Sunday, February 14 at 9am at the town courts.

Already entries have been received from all over Lower Eyre Peninsula with the cut off of Thursday. The players that win through to the semi final in the boys 13 years and under event and girls event will represent Lower EP in the Be Active Cup in Berri in October. For more information contact Julie on 8683 4233.

In the latest round, junior teams decided to bypass the Nelson Square courts and play Thursday night instead, which proved to be popular. This will probably be the case for the rest of the year with urgent repairs needed to the courts.

Nadal 9 sets 54 games def Djokovic 0 sets 31 games

With top playing bottom in the doubles round you would have never thought this was the case with Tim Stoeckel and Kealy Byass for Nadal getting home in the tie-break. Although Nadal won the other two doubles Djokovic had their opportunities to win the matches but just couldn't win the important point in the closing stages of the match.

In the singles Fanie Bouwer and Briony Velhyuzen slogged it out with Fanie managing a win in the tie-break. Andre Bouwer was also pushed in his match, but got home in the tie-break. With Nadal clean sweeping the singles they secured their spot at the top of the ladder.
