A WALK to Cure Diabetes event will be held in Port Lincoln this Saturday to raise money and awareness about type 1 diabetes.
The Filipino Health Professionals and Friends International Association is organising the walk in partnership with the Port Lincoln Lions Club and funds raised will help the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's research strategy to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.
Filipino Health Professionals and Friends International Association founder and president Mary Ann Espinosa said all the money raised from the event would go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a leading non-profit contributor to type 1 diabetes research.
Mrs Espinosa, who is diabetes nurse educator, was inspired to organise Port Lincoln's first Walk to Cure Diabetes because diabetes is a condition close to her heart.
Both her parents died of diabetes related complications.
The Filipino Health Professionals and Friends International Association and the Port Lincoln Lions Club are working together to host the event, and hope local groups and the wider community will come out to support the cause.
Mrs Espinosa said it would be a fun family day to show support for people with type 1 diabetes and to raise awareness about the condition.
It will be followed by a barbecue lunch and activities for the family.
Registrations open at 8am on the Port Lincoln foreshore and the walk will start at 9.30am on Saturday.
