LOCALS who served in the National Service were remembered at a memorial service at the Garden of Remembrance on Saturday morning.
Padre Norman Johnson lead the service encouraging everyone in attendance to remember those who had died during their service including four local servicemen, Doug Baker, Teddy Carlyle, Ronald Hood and Kevin Mitchinson.
“This annual wreath laying ceremony brings together ex-service man and women, family and friends to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all those who undertook National Service between 1951 and 1972,” Mr Johnston said.
He said they were owed the honour of respect for delivering freedom.
Mr Johnson said the memorial day was a way to honour those who fought and particularly those who died.
Local National Servicemen’s Association (Nashos) branch president Allen Turner read the ode of remembrance and wreaths were laid by Mr Turner and members Graham Ellis and Noel Reidy.
Mr Turner then raised the Australian flag from half mast.
The gathering also remembered members who had died in 2016 including Thomas Simms, William Siviour, Robert Glass and Robert Andrew.
