Olympic gold medallist Kyle Chalmers was no match for reigning Australian champion Cameron McEvoy in the 100-metre freestyle final at the Hancock Prostpecting Australian Championships on Wednesday.
Chalmers qualified third fastest for the final in the preliminary final earlier in the day, behind McEvoy and Jack Cartwright.
In the final, Chalmers went into the final 50m in third behind McEvoy and Cartwright but managed to pull himself up to finish nearly 0.2 seconds in front of Cartwright.
He could not match the pace of McEvoy, who went on to win the race by nearly 0.3 seconds.
All three finished under World Championship qualifying time.
Chalmers finished his championships participation on Thursday in Marion Swimming Club’s 4x100m medley relay team.
The team finished third behind the Melbourne Vicentre Swimming Club and TSS Aquatics teams.
