Port Lincoln impresses with first state jiu-jitsu gathering

Port Lincoln Brazilian jiu jitsu competitors were rewarded for their talents as Reality MMA (mixed martial arts) hosted its first ever state gathering on June 11.

The gathering brought together adults and youth from other Will Machado BJJ schools in Adelaide, Port Augusta and Whyalla.

Reality MMA chief instructor Sam Broughton said it was a good turnout with participants coming from across the state with Port Lincoln earning the team trophy.

“Port Lincoln earned the most points, junior students got golds and silvers and only two divisions didn’t get any awards,” he said.

“When you see the way students perform against other schools, especially schools in Adelaide, it’s very promising.”

Golds for Reality MMA included Holly Kooistra in the kids’ lightweight division, Jason Barns in the kids’ heavyweight division and Dean Matthews in the adults’ white belt lightweight division.

Mr Broughton said the children and adults were very keen about the state gathering in Port Lincoln and the gym was looking at maybe hosting two state gatherings a year.
