The Tumby Bay Area School is keen to see country schools across South Australia opening up to the wider community as community hubs.

The state government has made its ‘Schools as Community Hubs’ concept a priority to transform schools into hubs to enhance community engagement through sharing facilities for sport and other events.

As part of this, the department will be helping to guide schools, community groups and sectors on how they can open up school facilities to be accessible to everyone.

Tumby Bay Area School principal Nicky Prosser said it would be a great thing for country schools to open themselves up more to their local communities.

She said this was something the school was already doing.

“We currently utilise a lot of our facilities for our community,” she said.

Ms Prosser said ‘community’ was a school value and the school was already reaching out to the wider community.

This outreach includes sports groups using the school’s recreational centre or hosting performances in its activity room.

“We support being a community hub and sharing our facilities and resources, which is part of what we already do,” Ms Prosser said.

The concept promotes schools as a focus for community life and encourages community use of school facilities.

The department’s Early Years and Child Development executive director Ann-Marie Hayes said the concept aimed to meet school and community needs through strengthening relationships and partnerships.

“Many of our sites already have strong relationships with community members, organsations, groups and services, and work with them in innovative ways what work best for them,” she said.

“There are countless benefits of community hubs in helping to build stronger social networks, enhance community wellbeing and increase engagement which leads to better learning outcomes for children, young people and their families.”
